The low block isn't boring — it's a laboratory

I used to restart any save the moment I conceded a counter from a corner. Now I keep a tiny spreadsheet: minute, xG chain starter, whether we were set or unset, and which midfielder was supposed to screen.

What changed

Football Manager rewards the same patterns the real sport debates: compact lines, rest defense, and how wide your full-backs dare to be. The sim exaggerates transitions just enough that you can see cause and effect without needing broadcast chalkboards.

If you can narrate why the ball died in the half-space, you can fix it without buying four wonderkids.

A habit that stuck

  1. After every match, one paragraph of prose — no stats sites, just memory.
  2. Once a month, re-read those paragraphs and tag recurring sins (late shifts, slow restarts, keeper tempo).

Try it on a mid-table Serie A side where you can't buy your way out of problems. The blog posts practically write themselves.
